Types of Fur

Below you will find a brief description of the most common different types of fur and how to tell what they are. The type of fur used can determine the price and value of a fur coat because not all furs are created the same.

Chinchilla
It is very soft and has a gray to slate blue color.

Coyote
It is very dense and creamy. Coyote fur is usually used for jackets for men. The color is either tan or gray.

Ermine
It is white with black tips. Ermine is a type of weasel, and the fur is extremely silky.

Fisher
This fur is long, dark and shiny.

Lamb
It is lightweight and shiny it has a wavy pattern to it with hair that is long and curly. It's mostly white in color but can also be gray, black or brown.

Lynx
It is white and furry.

Marten
It is long silky fur with it's color ranging from gold to dark brown.

Opossum
It is coarse, very woolly and short in nature. Opossums are mainly used for men's coats or liners.

Rabbit
It is grooved and medium in length.

Raccoon
It is a very thick fu and it is very dense and durable. It is usually gray or black with silver tips.

Sable
It is light and silky. Sables are the most expensive furs in the world because it is so rare and extremely shiny.

Tanuki
It is light amber brown with dark-colored markings. Besides the color It looks similar to the raccoon fur but this is the Japanese version.

Badger
It is long haired and has gray guardhair and creamy underfur

Marten
Dark rich brown, Scottish. The American Marten is different - more golden and fluffier.

BEAVER
Beaver can be dyed or natural (usually natural for vintage items). Glossy and hardwearing.
